The more things change; the more things stay the same. This certainly has rung true for us at Skin Iowa! While we’ve seen many changes since our opening in 2006 to the offerings in the cosmetic aesthetics world, our underlying commitment to pursuing the highest level of education and offering the latest state of the art treatments has always remained the same.
When Susan Schooler PA-C opened Skin Iowa’s doors, Governor Branstad (who was the President of Des Moines University at the time) was present at our grand opening – and boy, was it a sight to behold! All of Susan’s supporters, along with renowned colleagues that she had met throughout her studies were there to support her as she set off to offer the people of West Des Moines and the surrounding areas the highest level of aesthetic offerings and dermatological care. To date, Susan Schooler is one of only two Physician Assistants who owns a practice in the state of Iowa. She was also the first non-physician injector back when the only filler was bovine (made from cows) collagen and required skin testing prior to injecting into the lips. We have certainly come a long way since those times!
In 1993, along with Susan’s first mentor and supervising physician, Dr. Michael Hill, she underwent extensive training with the highly respected Dr. Zein Obagi. Skin Iowa was the first to bring his original skin health (if you know about Dr. Obagi, you know he never called it skin “care”) line to the state of Iowa. Susan subsequently trained with him many times over the years, and he eventually granted Skin Iowa the rights to be a certified “ZO Skin Health Institute”. During Susan’s years working with Dr. Hill, an ENT/Facial Plastic Surgeon, while on a rotation crossed paths with a student named Michon. Immediately Michon stood out to her as a highly motivated, and passionate student. Over time, their friendship blossomed, and professional paths continued to cross until they finally had the opportunity to work together and join forces to become the dream team they are today.
As the years (and technology) have progressed from bovine lip filler to PRP skin injections, so has the education and experience of our team. But what hasn’t changed is our commitment to learning and evolving to be the best providers in all of Iowa for our loyal patients.
